Someone once said,
"Learn to say 'no' to the good so you can say 'yes' to the best."

And in the past several months I have realized more and more that my best is what I can give to my ultimate priority - my family.

Is blogging a bad thing? Absolutely not! I have made so many wonderful friends and have been able to share a bit of myself out there. But as The DIY Dish continues to grow, I know that I have to re-evaluate how I am spending my time, and so with some regret and a whole lot of hope, I will be taking my JesseKate Designs blog down.

But I promise I'm not gone! :) I will be blogging over at The DIY Dish, and so I truly hope you will follow me over there. Please say you will! And I'll still have the blog up for a few more days.I want to stay in touch!

Shelli, you did an amazing job today. I couldn't have been more thrilled to watch you present and you did so well at it. I LOVE the pattern you came up with. I've got to make some right away.

You all know how much I love machine embroidery. HOWEVER, hand-embroidery is what I truly enjoy doing when I want to sit down and relax. I think it's a good thing that Shelli happens to have some of the cutest patterns out there. Her artistic talents and attention to detail just come shining through in everything she does.

Though this post was written to my creative friend, Heather, it is also for everyone. Different circumstances didn't allow her to make the trip from Georgia to Utah for this conference, and so I promised lots of pictures. :) I hope you all enjoy them as well.

This last weekend Kim and I attended the SPARK conference which was held in Lindon, Utah. With a beautiful autumn-filled atmosphere on the outside, the inside of the building was just as beautiful in its ambiance. Margie Romney-Aslett, Rhonna Farrer, and Elizabeth Kartchner were the creative geniuses behind the event.

It was absolutely amazing from start to finish. My creativity has been "sparked" once again and I could hardly wait to come home and madly write down all of these ideas and thoughts that were brought to my mind throughout the weekend.

Here are just a few pictures that I hope will inspire you. These first pics are from the main hall. Talk about a wonderland. An eclectic, vintage charm was in abundance.

Sponsors were extremely generous in the oodles of fun, new products to try. These hand-sewn burlap bags were given to each of us filled with goodies.

I was fascinated in taking a photography class from the amazing Wendy of BlueLily Photography. She was such a good teacher and just a genuinly nice person as well.

Encouraging quotations were found all over the building to help kindle our creative spirit.

The centerpieces on all the tables were so striking to me in their own artistic ways!

I got to dabble with fabric, mixed media and wool. It was lovely.

Old friendships were renewed and new friendships blossomed. I'll share more of those pictures a little later.

Even the food and its presentation was absolutely delightful.

So it's back to reality now. ha, ha. And that's perfectly OK with me. :)

Music from the talented Mindy Gledhill was also a highlight from me. Talk about real. Mindy shared her experiences with us on the ups and downs of getting to where she is now, and what led her to write different songs. What an incredible gift she has and is so willing to share.

Here is a video from YouTube featuring one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in a long time. It's called "All About Your Heart." She wrote this song for NieNie. Everytime I hear it, I get chills. I'm just mesmorized when I watch this little girl spinning round and round. So full of joy and innocence, you can't help but smile when you watch this.

And when I came home from the conference, guess what I did. Yep, that's right. I put the CD into the player and blasted it while twirling around with my girls. That's called bliss. :)

I walked away from this with such a lift in my soul.

I've had a chance to really reflect. To take pause.

And this is what I know.

I truly believe that creativity is a gift from God.

I also believe that we ALL have been bestowed with that gift. I know some who don't feel they are creative. And that couldn't be further from the truth.

It comes in different forms. We can become creative in our homes, as sisters, wifes or mothers. We can create delicious and healthy meals for our families. As women, we have gifts to share such as a smile, a warm hello, or a listening ear. Our creativity can come through music, dance, gardening, or even through our abilities to nurture others.

It can also come through the PROCESS of creating.

No two people nor things are alike. And that is what is so beautiful to me about being creative.

A Fancy Nancy Soiree!

Too. Much. Fun.

My youngest has turned 4. She's into pink. And dresses. And pearls.

And don't forget the glitter.

It's time for a "Fancy Nancy" birthday party! Here are some pics of her special day!

Of course we had to have peanut butter sandwiches with frilly toothpicks!

You can never have too much tulle! Even our little doggy got in on the fun!

The girls made necklaces from Fruit Loops cereal. It was the perfect project for that age group! (And of course the Fruit Loops needed to be presented in a fancy bowl.) :)

Garland was hung...

...and nails were polished!

My personal favorite were the fancy glasses with a bit of whimsy! The girls loved their crazy straws!

And finally, what is a party without a pinata? This lipstick pinata I found at a local party store and filled with goodies. The girls got to rush for the candy afterwards and fill their little purses!

Oh, what fun we had! And actually it was all pretty easy to put together! When you've got a little one who loves all that frilly stuff, it's not too difficult to find the party decor amongst items you already have on hand! I love all of the Fancy Nancy books and so do my kids. They're just darling and they add new words for a little one's vocabulary!

It was a stupendous day!

Studio 5: Picnic Garland with More Ideas!

Last week I had the opportunity of teaching a segment on our local NBC/KSL's Studio 5. It was a lot of fun and I was able to share more ideas of what to do with the same technique as BBQ garland I had made earlier in the summer. Think birthdays, Halloween, Christmas.... so fun!

Deep dish pizza...world-famous hot dogs....yep! CHICAGO!!

(And I don't even like hot dogs.) LOL

But "When in Chicago..." right?

Kim and I spent a few days last week in Chicago for the Annual Craft and Hobby Association (CHA) Summer Show. Being there was like being a kid in a candystore!

We got to check out all the coolest new tools that are about to hit the market, as well as revisit some old favorites. Over 400 companies were there representing some of the most inventive new products in the craft industry! What fun!

We were also fortunate to meet many wonderful people while there. I'll show some of my favorite pics and then later this week I'll share some pictures on our "off" day. We also did several "video blogging" spotlights while there, so be sure to check out theDIYdish.com blog to find those all there throughout this week!

First off...2 of my favorite people in the industry! Cathie Filian and Steve Piacenza from HGTV's Creative Juice. They were as warm and endearing as I find them on TV. It was so fun to meet them for the 1st time as they were there showcasing their new "Hot Glue Gun Helpers" from Plaid. (Definitely check out the video we took on these! Very cool!)

And recognize this gal? If not, you'll surely recognize what she represents...MOD PODGE ROCKS! Amy is one awesome gal who loves her decoupage! Check out her blog for oodles of inspiration from around the globe.

Then of course I love all of the creative and amazingly talented folks behind Provo Craft, makers of the Cricut. They were there to debut their brand-new product- The Cricut Imagine. Oh. Wow. Amazing. It is similar to the Cricut expression, but can print out in color!!! All cartridges are interchangeable as well. So, so cool. Jinger is their spokeswoman and then there's Maggie who I just adore and is a huge proponent of ProvoCraft with her "challenges" she creates over at her blog. Maggie is so, so sweet. I could sit and visit and laugh with her for hours if given the chance.

Here's Kathy Cano-Murillo, otherwise known as "Crafty Chica." She's just as nice as they come! She has her own product line filled with flashy and vibrant colors. Her work is beautiful! And so is she!

We met "Suede" from Project Runway. One very cool dude. He was there showing how he made actual FASHIONS from the eCraft Central machine. He definitely has his own style! What he was able to do with that machine was quite remarkable!

And finally, another old and dear friend of mine in the crafting community, it was such fun to see Erin of Schlosser Designs again. Her creativity never ends. I always enjoy sitting down with her and hearing about her newest endeavors. She really is an inspiration.

On the last day while we were there, we got to hang out with Christi and Kelly. I'll share pictures later from our Chicago adventures! Can you say 94 floors to the top? :)

I know...seems to be impossible, right? But it's those small things that really can add up.

I've been following this great site/book called "The Happiness Project" by Gretchen Rubin. I love how she shares some real simple ways to invite more happiness into your life. Here is her recent video where she talks about keeping clutter under control.

And what I love best about what she said, is the last line in this video. She shares, "Outer order contributes to inner calm."

I absolutely agree. What do you think?

I Love Where I Live

Don't you just love it when you wake up in the morning, look outside, and gratitude just fills you all over?

Today was one of those days.

The apple trees below pictured with the snow-capped mountains above....

And the apple blossoms are now in full bloom...

And in a few short months, this blossom will become a branch full of golden, delicious apples.

It's like a fresh, new beginning. I love these little reminders that miracles do happen. Every. Day.

A Mother's Day Filled With Birthday Wishes

What a wonderful day it has been. Some think that by having a birthday and Mother's Day fall on the same day, they may be "jipped" by the double occasion.

But I can't think of a better way to celebrate my birthday than celebrating that I am also a mother. Being a mother is the most noble calling I coud receive in this life. I am so, so grateful.

At the dinner table this evening, my sweet husband asked the kids to say something that they were grateful for about their mom.

My 10-year-old said, "I am grateful that Mom was born." :)

So today I do celebrate that I was born and was blessed to be able to come to this earth with my twin sister. Some ask me what it is like to be a twin. However, I don't know what it's like NOT to be a twin. But what I do know is that it has been one of the greatest blessings of my life to have a sister.

I remember when Kim and I were in grade school and we sang the song, "When I Grow Up, I Want to be a Mother" in the school talent show. Do you remember that Kim? It went like this...

When I grow up, I want to be a mother and have a family:
one little, two little, three little babies of my own.
Of all the jobs for me, I'll choose no other.
I'll have a family. . . .

And I will love them all day long
and give them cookies and milk and yellow balloons,
And cuddle them when things go wrong,
and read them stories and sing them pretty tunes.

And so it goes- many years and 4 children later, I can't imagine my life without this greatest blessing in my life. It reminds me of a favorite quote of mine:

"If you think my hands are full, you should see my heart."

I am truly the happiest when I am with my family. Oh, sure there are days that are hard, but there are even more days when I sit back and look at my husband and my children and say, "This IS the life. This is what it's all about."

As I get one year older, it's sure a good thing my children keep me younger!

My Day on Studio 5: Make Frayed Applique

What a day! Today I had the opportunity to go on KSL's Studio 5 representing The DIY Dish. It's always, always so nerve-wracking. I keep thinking it will get easier one of these days, but I'm just so nervous having that it is completely LIVE and there are no re-dos!

But all in all, it was a great experience, too. I truly enjoy working with Brooke, Darin, and the entire crew there. Genuine kindness rings true as soon as you walk through the doors.

I Love Myself a Good Quilt Shop

When you love fabric as much as I do, the "radar" goes on as soon as I enter any new town or city. One of my first thoughts is, "I wonder where the nearest quilt shop is..."

To some, that may seem very odd.

And to others, you get it. You are my people. :)

I'm not sure exactly what it is. There's just something special about a quilt shop- the charm, the ambiance. And though some may argue that all may carry fabric, trust me...no two quilt shops are created equal.

Can anyone relate? :)

Several weeks ago, I got to visit one of my favorites- Cornwagon Quilt Company. It's absolutely lovely, and so very inspiring.

I found some amazing fabric from one of my favorite fabric designers, Paula Prass.

And this entire fabric line came home with me to make this...

...which inspired me to make this...

A Brilliant Easter Egg Tip!

= a BRILLIANT idea for dying Easter eggs!

My step-mom shared with me this tip from the recent issue of Family Fun Magazine.

"This month's issue had a great idea in it to help little ones color their Easter eggs without having to use a spoon or those little wire dipping tools that comes with the kit. Use a wire whisk instead! Just slip the egg between the wires, and your egg is nestled in a safe basket of wires! Less chance of breaking the egg as you dip it into your cup!"

Definitely an "a-ha moment" for me! :)

How Many Sewing Machines Can You Fit Into 1 Room?

"Never enough!" is my answer. :)

One of my favorite things to do is to quilt. What's even better? Quilting with friends. And it seems like these days, it sometimes gets more difficult to find the time to do just that.

Fortunately, I have some wonderful friends who MAKE the time to get together once a month to enjoy this creative time together. I am so blessed to have friends of all different ages in which sharing our passion of quilts really ties us together in a common thread. (No pun intended.)

Here are a few pictures of our most recent get-together. As you will be able to tell in these pictures, these women are so supportive, helpful, happy, and just downright wonderful. I love them all so much!

And just for fun, I'm going to share a few of my favorite quilting quotes in this post. :)

Make a St. Patrick's Day Centerpiece!

Ready for another festive project to make for your St. Patrick's Day celebrations? How about this fun and easy centerpiece! If you've been with me for awhile now, you may remember me showing you how to make a Valentine centerpiece that is very similar to this. So I decided to take a "twist" on the Valentine version and here is what I came up with!

Here's how to put this EASY centerpiece together!

Fill a glass sundae dish up with green M&M candies. (I purchased the sundae dish at our local Dollar store!) I think this would also be cute being filled up with rainbow-colored Skittles candy as well!

Set the sundae dish aside and now it's time to use your favorite popcorn ball recipe! (I use 1 cup light karo syrup, 1 cup sugar, and 1 small box of blue jello. Blue jello makes for sweet, fluffy, blue clouds!)

While popcorn is still warm, gently shape with your hands into a ball. Using wax paper on this step will help keep avoid the mess on your hands! Place on top of sundae.

Top with gold-wrapped candy.

Now I'm ready to introduce you to my "secret weapon" of the entire project...XTREME sour strips! ;) When I was trying to think of what would make a good "rainbow" on top of this centerpiece, my mind immediately went to this candy that is put out by the makers of Airheads. Perfecto!

To secure the rainbow strips on top of the popcorn, simply press some more warm popcorn around the ends to hold in tight.

And now you're done! Who will be the lucky one to receive this yummy piece?

It's Time to Film the DIY Dish!

My To-Do List of Just 1 Thing

Do you ever get to the end of the day and think to yourself, "I didn't get a thing done."

I say that quite often. (I'm sure you can relate.)

And my sweet husband corrects me and will list everything I did manage to do, or even attempted to do. I love him for that.

So when I came across this sticky notepad today, it immediately brought a smile to my face. Now that's my kind of to-do list!

Sometimes I think I need to just dilute the overwhelming to-do list, prioritize and give myself a pat on the back for brushing my teeth. LOL You know what I mean? :)Of course there are still so many things that need to be done, but we as women do all of that and more day in and day out, AND will continue to do so. Girl power! Congratulations to us!

A Mom Who Has Turned a Dream into Reality

I love it when I see friends succeed in following their dreams & passions. I want to share my congratulations to my friend Heather and her husband, who just opened up a brand-new garden center and gift shop in McDonough, Georgia this week!

Can you imagine the undertaking?

Wow.

Heather's creativity and optimism just weaves itself through the entire shop. I only wish I could see it in person, but she has some amazing pictures on her blog that you ought to check out.

Mela Kamin - A Singer, Songwriter, & Mom Who Inspires

There's nothing more inspiring to me than meeting someone who pursues their dreams and uses their talents in rich and meaningful ways. Even better? Meeting someone for the first time who is so "down to earth" and within minutes you feel like you are talking to a long-time friend.

Meet Mela Kamin.

This mom of 3 little ones has a wonderful story to share and it was just lovely to be able to meet her at Blissdom and to hear about her pursuing her life-long dream of becoming a singer and songwriter. As I listened to her and really could feel her genuine and sincere spirit, it quickly became very apparent to me how much she loves God, her family, and music.

I thought to myself, "What a wonderful example she is to her children."

Later that evening, I returned back to my hotel room and was anxious to find her website and listen to her music. Mela is a Christian singer and songwriter and every song is a reflection of her deep abounding love and faith. I was very touched by her music. The next morning I couldn't wait to find her and let her know. Mela was so gracious in her gratitude and then sweetly gifted me her CD. I was thrilled!

I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to the CD. I think one of my favorite songs is a very upbeat selection entitled, "Surrounded by Your Love." I couldn't help but have a little skip in my step this week while listening and cleaning my kitchen at the same time! :) What a great start to my day! Another favorite? "What He Does" also has a beautiful message and the harmony on this is absolutely mesmerizing.

Inspired by the Red Rubber Ball

What's the first thing that comes to your mind when you see this...

Elementary school? Recess? A hurried game of kickball on the field? Or does anyone remember the game of handball? I remember just racing outside at recess to get to the handball court. And then running back inside with the sides of my hands & wrists bright red from the powerful encounters with THE BALL.

Good times, good times.

So with that being said, when Friday's keynote speaker at Blissdom came on stage surrounded by red rubber balls, indeed it had captured my interest. For someone I had no idea who he was beforehand, I sat there so intrigued by his story, that by the end of his talk, I couldn't wait to tell him thank you. I left so inspired in every way.

Kevin Carroll is a man on a mission indeed. He travels all over the world, sharing his childhood story of how a red rubber ball influenced his life... and I would dare say, changed it. He helps others to identify what their "red rubber ball" is- those things that inspire you, that are important to you, and that you are passionate about.

For me? No doubt it's my family.

And there's another part of this analogy, too. And that is that PLAY is as important as is to eat and sleep. Really? you may ask. And I would say, "Absolutely." And for me, if I can incorporate more play with more of my family, then I indeed am a very blessed mom.

Because they just grow up way too fast.

So for 2010, there will be more of this...

and this...

and yes, even this...

All too often, I think I sit on the sidelines to watch. But I know without a doubt, that they love it more when I actually are with them. I mean, really with them.

Sometimes "resigning" from adulthood is a good thing.

Even for a few minutes. (Phew! What a relief!) :)

Happy mama...happy kids. Happy kids...happy MAMA!

Kevin has several books on this subject, one of which is this:

The representation of a simple red rubber ball has a powerful message to it about life and Kevin outlines 7 rules of the red rubber ball in his book. Once you've found out what that means to you, then here are the 7 rules that one should apply:

1. Commit to it.
2. Seek out encouragers.
3. Work out your creative muscle.
4. Prepare to shine.
5. Speak up.
6. Expect the unexpected.
7. Maximize the day.

So much more thoughtful detail for each of these areas are in the book. It is one I would highly recommend. I sat there in that room, feeling so proud of this man who overcame so much in his young life and has now gone on to do some amazing things.

A red rubber ball is an easy visual that I know I will keep that in mind when my 3-year-old asks me to play Candyland for the 5th time in a row, or my little guy wants me to go jump on the trampoline with him. Hey! I even went to Walmart this last week and picked one up for our family! My kids have had a ball! (No pun intended.)

It's a different stage of life for me then it was when I was running out to recess to play on that handball court.

And those good times are even better times now.

A Perfect 3-Year-Old Angel

Aunt Kim came over this afternoon and here was the conversation:

Kim: How'd you like me to take the 3-year-old shopping? I've got to run down to the grocery store for a few things.

Am I dreaming? It wasn't a dream! Aunt Kim rocks!

Me: Um...are you sure? I mean, she's not the easiest little gal to take to the store. She'll never stay in the cart and you have to watch her like a hawk before she runs under the t-shirt racks. And she's going to want everything in sight. (gulp...but please say you'll still take her even though I did the right thing by prewarning you...)

Kim: (without hesitation) Oh...she'll be fine! And it will be fun. No worries. Let's go!

An hour goes by. Kim comes back with a huge smile on her face. She says to me, "She was a perfect angel."

And then she shows me this pic from her i-phone...

Um. Ya. And this one...

Awww....nothing so precious as seeing your little one nap between the Cheeze-Its and the milk jugs. Oh, and don't forget Aunt Kim made a pillow from soft, 2-ply toilet paper no less.

She takes such good care of her.

My question is though...why doesn't she ever do that for ME? :)

I'm still cracking up. :)

Actually, my step-brother does, but in the spirit of blog disclaimers, I'll tell you this... IF YOU HELP ME OUT & VOTE FOR A SOLID GOLD COMIC of all comics, then I could totally win in his eyes- SISTER OF THE YEAR. That's right Kim...top that one! LOL!

Slightly confused?

Here's the scoop. My step-brother, (OK, so I HATE the word 'step')...my BROTHER, Brock is one amazing artist and writer. This guy has been drawing ever since he could hold a pencil. And he's very, VERY good at it. So good, that he and his two business partners are in the running for a very prestigious honor to work for a major comic book company, DC Comics. Pretty cool, huh?

What astounds me is his clever wit, creative eye, and how it is all expressed through his comics. He's got quite the talent!

But even more so, I know that winning this would be a dream come true for him. A real tribute in every way. It is what he has wanted since he was a child. Winning this would be such such a blessing for his family as well.

Speaking of which...

Is this not the cutest picture of his family? These two little sweeties and his beautiful wife are his absolute pride and joy. Here's another pic I just love...

Studio 5 Segment: UPDATE Decorate With Pillows! (KSL Segment LIVE)

Bring on the Valentine Hoopla!

Well, the big weekend is just about here and the kids and I spent the entire evening last night signing dollar store Valentine cards- (A BIG DEAL!), taping dum dum suckers to the cards, making and packaging treats, and yes, I'm exhausted! :)

Here are a few things we put together, however I still need to type out some little tags for some of the items that we're giving to teachers. I'm the room mom for my 5th grader's classroom, and so my whole afternoon is going to be spent teaching children etiquette lessons and then having a Valentine Social. They are to wear their best dress and boy are they excited!

Do you remember making these when you were younger? I'll tell you what...I don't think they've ever gone out of style. It's those candy "chips" that you melt in the microwave and then pour into plastic molds. Remember? And they are a SNAP to make with the kids. Very, very fun.

We then packaged them together in these cute lil' pillow boxes I picked up at Hobby Lobby. Tied with some ribbon I already had on hand, and wala! My middle-schooler was set to go.

Teacher gifts? Checkity-check. I'm thinking you can't go wrong with milk chocolate & caramel bites, along with body lotion. Easy.

Hubby's favorite snack is ready to go, courtesy of the kiddos. We're "nuts" about Dad!

How about "Blowing Some Kisses Your Way..." for a few special Valentines. We attached a pack of bubble gum to a small bag of the chocolate lips made from candy molds.

And finally, a little "puppy love" added to our preschooler's treat bag today. I simply used a test stitch-out I had done earlier and glued it onto a brown paper gift bag. And then last night I whipped out that handy-dandy embroidery machine to finish up an XOXO applique sweatshirt and matching hair accessory which was all done in the hoop!

Taking the Bliss from Blissdom 2010

Oh wow! I think I have finally recooped...even just a little, from the Blissdom Conference we just attended in Nashville Tennessee last week! It's been one week ago today that Kim and I hopped on an airplane to head over there. And what a wonderful weekend it was!

For those of you who were not able to be there, I hope you don't mind the picture-heavy post below. I would love to share a little more about what I learned and who I met at the conference, and perhaps you'll know someone here that I didn't know before! And to all my new friends from the conference, THANK YOU for being so fantastic! It was absolutely wonderful to meet so many wonderful women who cherish their roles as mothers, and love pursuing some great goals in life as well.

First off, I have to thank Mishelle of Secret Agent Mama and Deanna from Domestic Chicky who contributed some fabulous photos of the conference, some of which I was not able to get on my own. If it's an amazing picture, most likely they took it. If it's so-so, that means it comes from my diddly point-and-shoot camera I had to take with me when my Nikon couldn't make it with me on the plane! LOL!

As you know, Blissdom this year was held at the gorgeous Opryland Hotel. I can't even begin to tell you how unbelievable this place was. Over 50 acres...all inside. The place had its own climate I'll tell you!

Ali, Barbara, and Paula put on a stellar conference. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING was planned to a T. Some very generous sponsors such as ConAgra Foods, Hunts, and Blue Bunny to name a few really went above and beyond. For example, look at this centerpiece from lunch one day that was sponsored by Hunts!

Yes, flowers in the tomato can...with additional tomato flowers surrounding. I mean, "Who does that? Really? Who does that?" (You definitely wouldn't see something like that sitting at a table for a MEN'S conference!) LOL!

Hunts also brought a surprise guest with them! It was none other than.... George Duran from The Ultimate Cake Off on TLC! He showed us how to make this scrumptious eggplant dish that I'm actually going to make for my family THIS WEEK. It was delightful!

Kim and I had the opportunity to speak on a panel while there with several other neat, neat women. Our subject was, "Leveraging Social Media to Build Your Business." It was so fascinating for me to sit down with these women before our session started and to bounce ideas off of one another. I would have loved to have had lunch...and dinner...and even dessert with them afterwards just because there was such a wonderful comoradity there that I really cherished.

I've really learned so much over the last several years regarding the important role social media does play in building a business. I really hope that I was able to share some insights to help others learn and be motivated to keep going in what can oftentimes be an overwhelming undertaking. It doesn't have to be though and I think it's key to find out what social media avenues your "audience" uses the most and then really streamline your efforts so that it doesn't have to be daunting. The process actually can be very exciting! Others on the panel with us included Lisa from Lisa Leanoard Designs, Kimba from A Soft Place to Land, Amy from Little Alouette and Kirtsy, and Caitlyn from Mabels Labels.

I think that what I really treasured during this conference was meeting so many wonderful women out there. Some I had known before in-real-life, some only on-line, and others I discovered for the very first time. Here are a few pictures to share...

These gals were awesome. We instantly connected to the multi, multi-talented Lindsey from The Pleated Poppy (have my fabric poppy on my purse!) and Kristi from Pink and PolkaDot. (Love her tagline!) Kristi had such sweet concern and interest in my well-being while I was there suffering from some sinus issues. I'll never forget that Kristi! It was also a JOY to meet Hillary from The Other Mama. Oh my goodness...if you ever want to enjoy a good laugh with a friend who you've felt like you've known forever, then she's the one. :)

Here's another pic with Kristi as well as with Edie from Life in Grace. So warm, so gracious...and did I mention beautiful? Mother of 8 children, this amazing woman gave up her career just 2 years ago as a family physician and now focuses her efforts on everything she really enjoys in life. It was just fascinating to talk to her.

Two more favorites? These gals right here. Meredith from Hoo-dee-Hoo and Lizzie from LizzieB TV! I consider these gals "rock stars" in the arena of "vlogging." Their vidoes are so authentic and real. What you see is what you get...and I love that. Brilliant. Witty. And absolute coolness factor written all over them. :) They both have a great take on life and I am definitely their most recent #1 fan of each of them. I look forward to seeing what they continue to do in the future!

Kim and I enjoyed a wonderful lunch conversation with these two co-founders of Seek the Triad. Especially if you live in the North Carolina area, this is a site you will want to check out. Even if you do not though, Trisha and Mary Jean share a wealth of information on so many different topics. I'm so grateful that we were able to sit down for lunch on a "chance" meeting. So, so kind and so much fun to visit with! In face, I'm following MJ real close over the next 7 months as she tries to meet her goal of having Kelly Ripa's arms! Too funny! ;) Mark my words...she's going to do it, and she'll go on Live with Regis and Kelly to prove it come the fall season. You go girl! :)

Meeting the ever-amazing Lisa Leonard of Lisa Lenoard Designs and her twin sister, Chrissie of Flip Flops & Applesauce. Both seemed so true, sincere and honest. And BOTH are phenomenal business women as well in their own right. Lisa, a brilliant jewelry designer, and Chrissie, a DIY maven! So refreshing and downright enjoyable to visit with.

And how about Kimba of A Soft Place to Land and Jennifer of Balancing Beauty & Bedlam. I'll tell you what, Jennifer is the QUEEN of frugal living. This mom of 5 (yes, 5!) takes saving to a whole new level! I really enjoyed her sharing some things about how much she loves the Goodwill. Everything she has practically comes from there and you wouldn't even know it. And our gal, Kimba? I think she's one of my most favorite people out there. So dang funny and just an all-around great person. She's got an amazing blog and a phenomonal following. I'm sure many of you out there know Kimba! And once you do, I'm pretty sure you have a friend for life.

Check out our sweet feet we're sporting at the "Come Casual" night on Saturday evening!

And I don't want to forget this wonderwoman! Cathe of Just Something I Made was incredibly warm and friendly. Her sweet disposition makes you feel like you want to just hang out with her for hours and share stories of "tween"-aged children and more. She is a master at graphic design and I am in total awe of all her work. What a thrill it was to spend time with her and I hope we can work on some projects together in the future.

And FINALLY...many of you have asked about good ole' Harry!

So. Very. Cool.

He delivered and definitely did not disappoint. It was fantastic!

Get Your Craft On: Valentine Coupon Booklets

Last year at this time I was wracking my brain as to what I wanted to do for my children for Valentine's Day. And the thought that came to me was from something I had heard years ago, but have never forgotten. It was, "What children want most is your time." Now I know from firsthand experience, that they want lots of things! But I also know that the times I treasure the most are the times when we can do something together.

Somehow a sense of "calmness" always pours over my children when I am giving them my undivided attention. I realize that this is something I need to work on each day. I know I don't have to have a "coupon book" to remind me, but nonetheless, here is a gift I can give that puts into writing the times when I need to re-focus.

I've made one for each of them. Here's a list of what each coupon says:

...a date night with ME! (Let's "pow-wow" about where we want to go!)

EASY Valentine Craft for Your Home!

Valentine's Day is just around the corner and it is at this time of year, I love more than ever pinks, reds, and See's candy. :)

So tonight I had a church group of young girls, ages 12 and 13 over to get into the fun of Valentine crafting! I was inspired by my friend, Jenn from Tatertots and Jello when I saw her X and O pictures using clear marbles. To make this project go by a little faster, however, I decided rather than using the marbles, I would use tiny foam beads found in the floral section of your craft store. I then picked up some different frames from the Dollar Store as well as a variety of scrapbook papers. With white glue on hand, we were ready to go!

The girls first measured their frame openings by using the paper that already came with the frame. It made for a very easy template to cut out that cute scrapbook paper!

Then the girls drew a heart very lightly onto the paper and began to dip their small foam balls into white glue and place along the outline of the heart.

Some decided to cut an actual heart from a different piece of scrapbook paper, glue on the middle, and then glue the foam beads around it.

And before you knew it, we were all done! Replace the glass to the backside of the frame and add a ribbon if you choose! I thought all the girls did a really cute job. Here are some of the pictures and how they put their own spin on this project.

A Giant Robot, Harry, and The Super Bowl

Oh my!!! Today is Monday and in just 5 days, I will get to meet someone who I have enjoyed his career for many years!

My children would recognize his voice in this...

Oh yes, the "super cool" guy who befriends Hogarth and the Giant. Everyone needs a pal like him. But I'll never forget years ago when I heard his voice from this soundtrack...

Oh... that jazzy and sophisticated voice from the soundtrack, "When Harry Met Sally." Yes, the hairstyles there are dating me. :)

And before performing and cheering on his New Orleans Saints at The Super Bowl next weekend, he is coming to Blissdom! Talk about giving new meaning to the word, bliss.

Dear Red Box, I am on my way to using your sweet coupon you sent via the Blissdom box this last week. Need to check out these two Connick flicks-

So excited!! I think all of Blissdom is going to be fantastic. Alli and Barbara, the organizers, have done an amazing job of bringing all of this together. Kim and I will be speaking at one of the sessions, but I can hardly wait to learn so much from all who will be there.

Taking Down the Tree

My husband's side of the family get together each year after Christmas for a family party. My kids always have a ball playing with oodles of cousins- 26 now! (Or is it 27?) And no, I'm not making any announcement family- I promise. LOL

There's nothing quite like getting together with family, and this year it was also unique to go to a place where just the pure ambiance takes you back to a more simple and not-so-complex time. Sure, we had a few more modern-day conveniences than they did (wheels on the ride), but the nostalgia of looking back in time was really something special.

Christmas Morning Crumbs

What a joyful occasion to wake up Christmas morning! With snow outside, 4 little ones raced downstairs to see what awaited them.

It began with a few crumbs. Rascal picked up where Santa had left off. :)

After what took just minutes to unwrap what had originally taken hours TO wrap, (I'm sure you can all relate!), we all sat down for our traditional Christmas morning breakfast.

Baked grapefruit...

Lots of berries... (Some snitched before the blessing on the food!)

Juice and cinnamon syrup thanks to my friend Leigh Anne's blog...

And waffles with LOTS of whipped cream!

Check out that scrumptious cinnamon syrup dripping down! It was delightful, as well as very easy to put together! Leigh Anne shares the recipe HERE!

Of course you can't bring out the whipped cream without having a little fun with it, too. :)

Feliz Navidad...A New Christmas Eve Tradition

This year we decided to start a new Christmas Eve tradition! We have always liked to do a "Twas the Night Before Christmas" theme, however this year we added one twist. We thought it would be fun to choose a country and do some traditions they do to celebrate the season. So this year it was, "Twas the Night Before Christmas...in MEXICO!"

It was so much fun to do a little background research and to implement new recipes and games for the evening celebration. I chose things that were very do-able at such a busy time of year. Luminaries, or farolitos, made from brown paper bags lined the walkway outside.

Of course a pinanta was an absolute must! All of the kids had a ball!

Even Aunt Kim got into the fun!

Chicken tacos with all the toppings were on the menu.

A sweet rice, or arroz dulce is a common dish served in Mexico during the holidays. Oh my goodness...it was so yummy! Here is the recipe I used...

¾ cup rice
2/3 cup sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
4 cups milk
1 cup heavy whipping cream
¼ tsp. salt

Scald milk. Put the rice into a deep baking dish, cover with the hot milk, and bake in a moderate oven for 3 hours, or until the rice is soft. Stir occasionally during first hour to prevent sticking. If necessary, add more hot milk. When almost done, add vanilla, sugar, and cream, and finish baking.

I also learned that on this day it is customary to share a Rosca de Reyes among friends, a special sweet bread with miniature baby Jesus figures inside. Whoever finds the baby Jesus (often there are several in each Rosca) is supposed to host the party on February 2nd, traditionally serving tamales. I found a recipe on the internet to use, and instead of the figurine, I placed a couple of different whole almonds inside of the bread. The kids got such a kick out of this. And guess what? I've got 2 little boys ready to make tamales for all of us on February 2nd! LOL

The children's celebration of receiving presents is not until January 6th, "el día de Reyes", the day of the Kings, or the Wise Men Day. But for some reason, I couldn't convince my children that we were going to wait until then. Hmmmm...I wonder why? :)

Next year...we'll take a look at how they celebrate in Sweden! God Jul Och Ett Gott Nytt Ar!

A Healthier Halloween...It's Possible!

With all the candy and treats available at this time of year, sometimes it's fun to do something a little different with our families!

With being a member of the reader panel at Family Fun magazine, I received a fun little ebook a few weeks ago with some unique food creations to celebrate Halloween in a healthier way. Tonight as I gathered with some friends, this platter came with me and it literally took about 20 minutes to put together. Bravo Family Fun!

How about some edible eyeballs? These are carrot rounds. In the recipe it called for cream cheese and an olive to be placed on top. But because I love hummus so much (and so do my kids!), I decided to skip the cream cheese and add hummus instead. Then of course the olive slice goes on the very top!

Then we've got the salty bones. EASY peasy folks. Placed here are refrigerated breadstick dough strips that you can buy in the tube. Then you cut a slit at both ends to form two knobs...sprinkle some course salt, bake for 10 minutes, and wala! You're done! Now if I did want to spend more time on this, I probably would have opted for whole wheat rather than the store-bought, but time was of the essence and so these came together in a jiffy!

Little pumpkins were rolled up with a slice of cheddar cheese and whole wheat tortillas. A piece of cilantro or parsley on top with a toothpick made for a yummy addition.

And finally, "English Mummies" were on the platter. They were put together with an english muffin slice, pizza sauce, olives, green onions, and strips of torn string cheese. This picture does not show the cheese melted, however, they're best when served slightly toasted. Bake at 350 for 10 minutes and you've got some darling, melted-cheese mummies.

Sugar overload is almost a given, but I know it doesn't have to be. Finding new ways of making some old favorites will give your children a chance to have some fun and make some great memories as well!

On Pumpkins, Family and Community

This past week our family has had a second home...at a local park! Now you may think that sounds odd, but every year at this time, thousands from all over gather for the annual pumpkin festival where thematic scenes are created using PUMPKINS!

For the past 5 years, our family has contributed to making a scene. This year 3 other families joined our own in creating the "I Don't Want to Grow Up, I'm a Toys-R-Us Kid!" scene.

It took a lot of "behind-the-scenes" work to get ready for the big event. You start out with this...

and then with some great little helpers...

...You end up with something like this!

Recognize any of the 80's toys in these pictures? Oh...good times, good times. :)

Right beside the "Toys-R-Us" store, we had a "man" in a bathtub with bubbles (AKA smaller painted pumpkins.) We did this as part of the scene because of that 80's commercial where the man has his rubber duckies in the tub with him as he sings that famous Toys-R-Us jingle. Below are a few of the "bathroom" shots. Can you spot all the pumpkins?

So much time goes into things like this, but this is one of the many reasons why I love my community. At this time of year, I've never been real fond of haunted houses or corn mazes with spooky people jumping out at you. This event brings together people of all ages in a fun, positive, non-scary way to enjoy the beautiful fall weather with their families. And it's completely free!

My Own Little Pumpkin Patch...One Piece at a Time

Halloween Entertaining & Quilting for Fun

Sometimes we moms need a little break. To find something we enjoy doing so much AND doing it with good friends... it's just the perfect way to relax. That's why I enjoy being part of a quilt group who just once a month meets together for an afternoon of humming sewing machines, lots of laughs, and of course lots of yummy food.

This month was no exception.

What a sight to see! :)

After several hours of sewing, it was time for lunch. Kim and I thought it would be fun to make these unique little witch shoes out of paper and fill with candy. There is a great tutorial and template on this found HERE! So, so cute.

And the thing I love about this idea is that you could really take it to whatever theme you would like. Of course because of Halloween, we chose black. However, wouldn't it be fun to use this same idea for a princess party? How about red ruby slippers for your favorite Oz fan?

It was so fun to find different design papers for the inside of the shoes!

We had soup in pumpkin-shaped bread bowls! How cute is that? Nope- I did not make them myself. (I know my limits. :)) But our local grocery store have these in their bakery all month long and I just couldn't resist. :)

So now you may be wondering...what did I end up spending my time on sewing that day? Here's a glimpse...

I'll share the finished piece tomorrow! With using my embroidery machine almost on a daily basis, it was kind of a nice change-of-pace to be able to get back to my sewing roots with quilting. And to be able to do it for pure enjoyment? Absolutely refreshing.

Gourds Unique and Chic for Halloween

My good friend and neighbor, Kaylene, has such a knack at making these one-of-a-kind, dried and AMAZING gourds. That's right- they're completely dried. They'll last for years. And she has them NOW in her Etsy shop!

I know Halloween is just around the corner, so hurry! It's not too late!
Talk about CUTE. This one just makes me smile. Yep- gotta have it.

Apple Crisp, Apples Pops...Teacher Luncheon!

Last week Kim and I put on a teacher luncheon at our local elementary school on the day of parent-teacher conferences. This is a tradition each year with the PTA. We decided to go with an apple theme!

The serving table was filled with crockpots of hot soups, fresh rolls, and salads. But the real fun part for us was putting together a "take-home" treat of apple crisp mix and apple pops!

Because of my abundance of apples in my yard, I was happy to put together sacks of Macintosh apples to go along with a crumble mixture for each of them to take home and make apple crisp with their families.

Sounds yummy? Here's the recipe!

EASY Apple Crisp

1/2 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup brown sugar
3/4 tsp cinnamon
3/4 tsp nutmeg
1/2 cup whole oats
4 medium sized apples

(All of the above ingredients we mixed together in a bag. Then we added the note to tell them to add 1/3 cup softened butter to the above ingredients!)

Preheat oven to 375. Slice apples and put in small, greased baking dish. Sprinkle mixture over top. Bake for 30 minutes!

Then we thought it would be fun to make these apple pops! Such a great conversation piece...change the color, and these would make such cute pumpkins, too! We got the idea from www.Bakerella.com. She has SO MANY FUN ways to use the same basic instructions to make all sorts of cake balls. It does take a bit of time, but it really is very, very easy to do.

Of course a coordinating apple applique completes the basket of rolls...

And finally, you know me and vases with other items inside besides water.... LOL. It's a quirky thing I like to do! And we topped them with my very "sad-it's-past-summer" black-eyed-susans!

Overall, it was a very enjoyable fall afternoon lunch. I love finding ways to show teachers how much we appreciate them, don't you?

Bushels of Apples..and a Recipe!

We are lucky enough to have a home within an apple orchard. In our own yard, we have 4 fully mature apple trees. What a sweet part of life!

After having our first frosty morning this past week, we knew it was time for the apple picking to begin! So far, we have only done 2 of our trees. They are McIntosh apples and they are so, so yummy. We still have a Golden Delicious and a Red Delicious tree to pick.

I love this time of year!

I love getting the kids outside, all working together on harvesting something we have worked on all year long. I love the briskness in the air. It makes you feel alive.

Pretty soon these gorgeous apples will be eaten whole, made into fruit leather, applesauce, dried apples, and more. I've got my work cut out for me!

So in honor of the apple season, I thought I'd share one of my favorite apple recipes with you!

Apple Oat Muffins

1 medium apple, cored and grated
2 egg whites
1 cup buttermilk
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup whole wheat flour
½ cup raisins
¼ cup honey
1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon
½ teaspoon salt

(Although this recipe does not call for walnuts, I like to add some chopped walnuts to the mixture. It's up to you though.)

Preheat oven to 350. In large bowl, stir together the buttermilk, oats, and raisins. In a separate bowl, blend the whole wheat flour, baking powder, cinnamon and salt.

Add the egg whites and honey to the oat mix, and blend thoroughly.Blend the two mixtures together. Fold in the grated apple.

Fill greased muffin tin and bake for 20-25 minutes. Allow to cool for about 10 minutes in the pan before removing.
